State Legislative Update: Income Disregards

Feb 15, 2022

Today, the Income Disregards Bill (S6589 Persaud/A7534) was referred by the Senate Social Service Committee to the Senate Finance Committee. This Bill proposes a 100% earned income disregard to allow individuals completing a state or federally subsidized employment program to retain full public assistance benefits for six months.

Despite our efforts to get this far, we still need some changes to the Bill and need your support to make this happen.

Here are two things you can do today to make sure the Income Disregards are passed this legislative session:

  1. We are asking our members and partners to send a “Memo of Support” to your local NYS Senator /Assembly Member encouraging the Legislature to amend and pass Bill No. S6589A (Persaud)/A7534 (Rosenthal L.) to expand the programs that income may be disregarded from. Click Here For Support Letter Template & Member Emails. Please complete the letter for YOUR organization and cc: Melinda ([email protected]) or Evelyn ([email protected]) when you send it along.

  2. Sign up for our “ 2022 Virtual Advocacy Day” on Wednesday, March 2nd from 10am-4pm, NYATEP will take care of scheduling meetings with your local electeds, and getting you prepped – so you can share why Income Disregards and investing in workforce development is critical.
