NYATEP Advocacy Update

Jun 06, 2022

This weekend the New York State Assembly and Senate closed out the 2022 state legislative session. Due to the horrific events we experienced as a state and as a nation much of the focus during the final days of session was on the toughening of gun control measures and protecting women’s health. Unfortunately, the Income Disregard Bill S6589 Persaud/A7534 Rosenthal was one of the items that got caught up in the last minute push for gun control and it did not make it to the floor for an Assembly vote.  We want to underscore this was not a loss, especially for a bill moving outside of the budget process.

On Wednesday, June 1st the bill unanimously passed the Senate, 63-0 which was no easy feat and one that must be celebrated! We are extremely grateful for Senator Roxanne Persaud’s tenacity and persistence. Additionally, the advocacy of our Assembly Champion, Linda Rosenthal, all the calls, and emails that were made by the workforce development sector did not go unnoticed.  Your voices were being heard and were heard loud and clear and were what got the bill as far as it did in the final days of session.

We now have two Legislative champions, and many more who are aware, supportive and on our side whom we can turn to for support and their continued advocacy.  Let’s celebrate this victory and continue to build off this momentum to carry us through the next 6 months, until the next Session to get the Income Disregard Bill fully passed!

None of this is possible without YOUR partnership and dedication to ensuring that all New Yorkers have the opportunity and access to economically thrive.  THANK YOU!
