End of Session Review
Jun 18, 2024
Hard to believe another Legislative Session has gone by! The 2024 Legislative Session finished early Saturday morning.
NYATEP had a very productive session, continuing to be “in the room” where the discussions are happening. Through the hard work of all of our statewide advocates, we are thrilled to report that the NYATEP-led bill to create a task force to review and study the benefits cliff passed BOTH houses and will remain in the Senate (where it was first introduced) until requested by Governor Hochul.
The legislation, championed by Senator Roxanne Persaud and Assemblymember Maritza Davila, S7830A/S8431A would establish a fiscal cliff task force to conduct a study on fiscal cliffs in the state's public assistance programs and to make recommendations. Similar to last year, the Governor has until December 31st, 2024 to sign or veto.
We continue to support and encourage the Hochul Administration to sign this legislation into law.
Overall, we were disappointed that workforce development was not as big of a priority as we had hoped. This legislative year was fueled mainly by budget issues, political sparring, and the last minute changes to congestion pricing. Though every session in New York State tends to be unpredictable, this year was no exception!
As a reminder, this is an election year, and we would advise you to follow the races in your local area. Election day is June 25th. You can find your polling location here.
NYATEP will be launching an advocacy campaign to encourage Governor Hochul to sign the bill, and we will have more details soon.
