Busloads of youth came to Albany earlier today (2-1-10) to “Speak Out” about the importance of summer jobs and the proposed $35 million budget cut. Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Assemblywoman Susan John, and Senator Pedro Espada, Jr., provided remarks which included their strong support of the summer TANF program.

”To cut every penny out of SYEP is unacceptable. It’s wrong to downplay importance of a program that we fought for every year.”
-
“I want to assure you that you have powerful good friends in the Assembly.”
-
“I promise you that we are standing with you. And standing with you in the fight for Summer Youth jobs.”
Assemblywoman Susan V. John
“There have been other years Summer Jobs have been left out by one Governor or another and we’ve fought to put back SYEP dollars.”
“As Chair of the Assembly Labor Committee, Summer Jobs program is something I’ve fought to restore in the budget.”
Senator Pedro Espada, Jr.
“I was a member of SYEP when I was 14 years old in the South Bronx.”
“Rest assured the Senate Democratic caucus is with you to fight to restore SYEP funds.”
