Featuring Academy Speakers

Denise Bissonette who is one of North America’s most sought-after trainers and speakers on career development, job development, workforce development, and "true livelihood".

Plenary Session: Rekindle the Flame

Mother Teresa once suggested that “Great work is not the result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire.” Clearly we must be a lantern for ourselves before we can do the noble and humbling work of illuminating the path for others. Yet how often is the expression “I am burned out” heard on the winds within the workplace, particularly among those whose job it is to rekindle the flame of other people? Contrary to popular opinion, the antidote to burnout is not always rest – perhaps it is the sacred fire of purpose and passion that can only be lit and rekindled from within. Drawn from her newest book, The Wholehearted Journey: Bringing Qualities of Soul to Everyday Life and Work, Denise will open our Academy by sharing key ideas and practical suggestions for reconnecting with and renewing the purpose and passion that originally drew us to this work.

Workshop Session: Beyond Traditional Job Development: The Art of Creating Opportunity

In this dynamic, thought-provoking workshop Denise will give us new eyes and a new mind with regard to the potential and possibilities for youth as they look to enter the world of work! This highly acclaimed presentation is based on concepts from her compelling book by the same title in which Denise offers practical and effective strategies for creating employment opportunities based on the “individual genius of each person. Prepare to leave this session with an expanded notion of how to work with both the business community as well as your applicants!

Plenary Session: Cultivating the Spirit to Work

In this mind and heart shifting keynote, Denise presents a unique and inspiring framework around the critical and often elusive issues of motivation and self-esteem as they relate to preparing young people for any and all kinds of transition. This one-of-a-kind presentation will equip us to strengthen the spirit of young people as they prepare for and make necessary changes to enter world of work, moving beyond any and all barriers to employment. Be prepared to walk away from this session with a deeper understanding of your own motivation as well!

Workshop Session: Beyond Barriers to Passion and Possibilities: Creative Employment Tools

In this fast-paced, highly participative session Denise will present four of her most popular employment tools which can be used to uncover individual talents, interests and values; identify vocational preferences and deal with unrealistic expectations; and, look beyond ordinary job openings to creating new opportunities based on individual abilities.

Dr. Steve Parese has been an educator since 1986, teaching and developing programs for populations with special needs in a variety of therapeutic, community, and correctional settings.

Workshop Session: Preparing At-Risk Youth for Workplace Success

At-risk youth often have difficulty with peers and authority figures in school, home, and neighborhood. These difficulties are sure to cause problems in the workplace, where coworkers and supervisors are much less tolerant of behavioral problems than fellow students, teachers and parents. While a good job can be an important resiliency factor for many youth, the adjustment from school to work can be challenging for those who have not developed vital people skills or do not understand the unspoken rules of today's employers.

This 3-hour workshop will (1) explain why at-risk youth and young adults have trouble adjusting to the culture of the workplace, and (2) offer strategies for teaching them how to work through workplace problems, rather than blowing them out of proportion.

Workshop Session: "Leave Me Alone! No Wait, Don't Go!" Insights into the Psychological World of Emotionally Troubled Youth.

Emotionally troubled youth have learned to be relationship-wary. To avoid deeper loss and pain, they have developed self-defeating belief systems, patterns of thinking and behavior that allow them to control disappointments by sabotaging relationships before they fail on their own. Unaware, staff may find themselves feeding into these self-defeating patterns, rejecting youth instead of behavior.

This 3-hour workshop will provide participants with valuable insights and skills needed to: (1) understand the psychological world of troubled youth; (2) maintain a therapeutic perspective in challenging situations; and (3) skillfully listen and de-escalate emotionally distraught youth.

Ed DeJesus brings missionary-like zeal to the positive potential of youth development. As a parent and a committed community advocate, DeJesus knows that the true strength of our nation is our youth.

Successfully Engaging Youth

While many adults struggle to reach urban, inner city youth with services and supports, Edward DeJesus, Founder, President, and CEO of the nation’s pioneering youth policy and advocacy firm: The Youth Development and Research Fund (YDRF), actually makes it look easy. He has been reaching youth with a message that parents and educators have been trying to convey for years: education and work experience makes a big difference. DeJesus is the author of Countering the Urban Influence: Reclaiming the Stolen Economic Fortunes of America’s Youth. For the past twenty years, DeJesus has committed his life to working with youth who need options beyond the streets. He has directed several major youth initiatives in the South Bronx, Harlem and Washington Heights sections of New York City. DeJesus is currently the Vice Chair of the National Youth Employment Coalition, an advocacy group of more than 300 youth programs across the Nation that fights for employment and training opportunities for our nation’s most at-risk youth.
